My heartfelt condolences on your loss. "Mr. St. Clair", as I knew him, taught me Latin at New Canaan Senior High School (I am of the class of 1968) and I have fond memories of him as an enthusiastic and engaging teacher, although I was a mediocre student. All who knew him were blessed.

My deepest condolences on the loss of Jim. As a cherished friend, colleague and mentor, I will sorely miss him, I can only imagine the void his passing will leave in your lives. Jim was a giant of a man, not only in his emotional intelligence but also in his encyclopedic knowledge of our ancestors and our genealogy - gifts which he freely shared. May you take comfort in the knowledge that his presence here on earth counted. His legacy will live on in our hearts and minds.

It is with deep sadness that we learned of Jim's passing. Jim coloured our world with his interesting, often humorous storytelling. We fondly cherish those memories. He always displayed a humble and gracious spirit. Jim, you left your "footprints" on our hearts and we'll never forget you.

The village of Mabou has lost a kind, extremely knowledgeable, gentle soul! Years ago a Cape Breton co-worker recommended Jim as a renowned researcher for Cape Breton genealogy. I was able to contact him, and he was so taken with my great grandparents' photo, he took on my "case". Lots of emails and research later, he met my Victoria BC sister and I at the Mull Cafe, Mabou, for lunch. Papers and maps abounded helping us make connections to the area including the site where the original house had stood late 1800's on the street of Mabou. He was so generous and helpful to us. Last September 2020, my husband and I were back to the area stopping at the Inverness Beach boardwalk. I was taking a photo of the rolling waves when this quiet gentleman sitting behind me mentioned "Too bad you couldn't get the sound of the waves." I said,"I did. It is on video." That started a conversation and he revealed that it was he that I known from previous times. His last words to me were "Next time you are in Mabou, I will take you for a drive down the old country roads"... where my grandfather had been born. I am very sorry we haven't been back since. It is interesting that he is a descendant from the Isle of Mull, as that is part of my history as well. Rest in Peace, Dear Jim.

Jim's voice will be sorely missed. His research and stories of, about, and for Inverness County in particular and Cape Breton more generally, will have lasting value.

Jim St. Clair was Storytellers of Canada - Conteurs du Canada's StorySave teller for 2008, and we recorded a 3 CD project entitled simply Stories from Cape Breton." I first met Jim at the Highland Village in Iona, probably in conjuction with the University of Cape Breton's Storytelling Symposiums. Jim told stories by candlelight. Who could forget that? Or the night that Linda Winham, the producer for the Story Save recording, and Liz Newkirk, a Halifax storyteller, drove to teh Inverness County Centre for the Arts to do a show: "Through the Mists of Time: Old Celtic Tales." There must have been 4 weddings and a funeral on that night as our audience consisted of the bartender, the organizer, two tourists and Jim. Jim was an incredible listener. If you ever had to present a show for one person only, you would have been well-rewarded for your efforts if it had been Jim. He will be missed in the Storytelling world. Dear JStC, As my charismatic Latin teacher for Latin III and Latin IV at New Canaan High School in Connecticut, from 1963 through 1965, you gave me and my classmates all of that ancient, gorgeous, rich Latin. Because of that, when I studied Latin V in college, my fellow students looked upon me as a wonder. Of late, you and I shared our particular, almost sacerdotal, knowledge of the magic of Nahant Bay, the sea, the skies, the colors and configurations along Lynn Shore Drive, where I live, in Lynn on the Swampscott border, and which, as a youth, you often walked along for a mile or more, back and forth, stopping at a clam shack I wish were still there. I'm glad I could send you iphone camera photos from Lynn Shore Drive and from around the towns of Lynn, Swampscott and Marblehead, which, along with the Town of Nahant, are part of our almost-secret crescent of storied and sempiternal New England. As you taught us that Catullus wrote, in mourning, "Ave atque vale"...you shall be forever in our memory, Nancy Hutchinson ( Erdmann), NCHS Class 1965

"Sunt lacrimae rerum et mentem mortalia tangent." (Aeneid, Book I) How grateful am I to have had Jim St. Clair as my Latin teacher from 1962-5. I never had a better teacher, before or since. Much more than that, Jim was a rare and remarkable human being. He may be gone, but his light still shines brightly. I join his family and friends, my fellow New Canaan High School graduates, the people of Cape Breton Island, the MacFarlane Woods and Mull River and the spirits therein in celebrating his life and mourning our loss.

Mr. St. Clair's Latin class of 16 year olds was shocked when he said " You are dying from the moment you are born " despite the obvious logic of this truth. It has remained with me nearly sixty years and was resurrected last week while rereading Tolstoy's " The Death of Ivan Illyich. " Our teacher led his life with deep meaning and purpose, unlike Ivan. When I listen to Orff's Carmina Burana all the four humors become alive again along with Mr. St. Clair whose essence is eternal.

Farewell, my friend of 45 years and my teaching partner of 11 years! Given our mutual love of Shakespeare, you would appreciate HAMLET {I,ii) to say goodbye: "He was a man, take him for all in all; I shall not look upon his like again." Jim, the rest is silence!

Sincere condolences to Jim's family and many friends. Such fond memories of Jim's high school English class, he cultivated curiosity like no other. Later years just meeting him spontaneously would open a conversation of community and its people, both of which he was so invested. Rest easy Jim.

Both of these gentlemen passionately contributed their core beliefs, influencing lives of their students at University College of Cape Breton. May their caring bear fruit with those they have influenced and may they Rest in Peace.

I was one of the students who arose at the crack of dawn to study Greek at New Canaan High School in the early 60's. What he taught me was much larger than any language. He taught me what it was to be truly a scholar, in love with learning. I was privileged to spend time with him a bit over the decades when visiting Cape Breton and he remains an outsized person and soul. As Emily Dickinson said, "Hugenesss of soul demands an awkward rind" --surely true of Jim, but his greatness of spirit has enriched us all in two countries over all these years and an example of a life well and deeply lived. I am deeply grateful.

My condolences to the family. I was a student of Jim's at New Canaan High School, and I'm sure that I am only one of many many young people for whom Mr. St. Clair made a huge positive difference in their lives. For me, and I suspect for many, that influence was deep and invisible. It was just the example of his strong human traits that has lived inside many of us, life-long, as an inspiration for living. I am so grateful to have been blessed by his gentle attention.

Jim (as we knew him), taught in NC during the late 50's through the mid 60's. He made learning fun. The HS Greek club sponsor, he convinced many of us to come to school an hour and a half early to be entertained, and perhaps learn something. many memories of him standing on his desk reciting Ovid or Ceasar in our Latin class. He will not only be missed, but will be remembered by hundreds of his students. George Cody, class of 1965

Ed and I are so sad thinking of a world with the wisdom and knowledge of Jim St. Clair. It was with great trepidation that I first asked Jim to read through a draft of my first novel, but he was so gracious and supportive that he gave me great confidence to continue. I was so grateful for his background knowledge on many a subject and will miss him greatly! I know you all will feel his absence even greater, but know that we all share in your grief, and are very grateful for all he did to help keep the stories of Inverness County alive.

Jim, just a note to recognize the huge contribution you made to your ‘homeland' of Cape Breton. You certainly did a great job, over your 90 years, to keep your/our people in memory. Your epitaph/work is seen, heard, and written, in the Inverness Oran, the Participaper, Information Morning, the Beaton Institute, Cape Breton Heritage Connection, An Drochaid, the Gaelic College, Mabou Pioneers, etc. Thank you.
