I first met Ian in 1967 when I worked with him in White Cross Pharmacy as a student pharmacist. I noticed then how much he cared for the people, our customers in Fairview. Later on I had the privilege of calling on him as a sales rep, a good experience I'll always remember. My condolences to the family. Rest in peace, my friend.

I am a pharmacist in St. Peter's who is part owner of MacDonnell Pharmacy. I worked a few shifts for Ian in Port Hawkesbury in the early 2000's when he was short-handed. We also ran in to each other at various CE and PANS events. I loved Ian's sense of humour and commitment to his communities. I remember thinking " I hope I'm still as good at my job as he is when I'm in my later years of practice" and strive to be to this day. Condolences to Ian's family.

What a wonderful obituary for a very fine individual! Ian "outranked " the rest of us in the College of Pharmacy's class of '77 by many years, but we couldn't have asked for a better classmate! I had the privilege of seeing Ian only occasionally after graduation, but I enjoyed each of those times immensely and I'll always remember his great laugh! Please accept my sympathies for the loss of your husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Ian was the first person I met when I walked through the door at the College of Pharmacy. I will always remember his laugh and his calm nature. This boy from N.B. stuck to him like glue the first week. Like so many of the class of 1976, I respected and admired Ian for his stamina and courage. After graduation, he took his practice to a level where few ever achieve. Having lost my Mum on March 27th, the pain is indescribable and one way to cope is to talk about Ian and all the good he accomplished during his lifetime. I know I am a better person for knowing my friend Ian. God Bless

My deepest condolences at this time. The first time I met Ian was back in 2010 at my first FSANS (Fire Service Association of NS) conference in Truro, I was so impressed with him. He was kind and a true gentleman. It was my first conference and I was nervous to speak, he went out of his way to give me the encouragement I needed to stand up and deliver my message. After that I always looked forward to him attending our conference and I have missed seeing him in the last few years. He had a great sense of humor too and I can tell you, without question, he was one of the finest men I had ever had the pleasure to meeting and chatting with! Take comfort in the days ahead. My prayers and thoughts are with his family. Rest in peace Ian....Sincerely, Beth Edwards, Executive Director, FSANS

A fine and gentle man has left us far too soon. To us kids at the College of Pharmacy he was the epitome of courage in returning to school later in life to better himself to support his family. I had the deepest respect for this man who did not look down on us youngsters, and often gleefully joined in whatever shenanigans we were having. A quiet (mostly) man who helped out where he could. I did not see much of Ian after graduation, but I have carried him in my thoughts as an example throughout my life of a real, true Gentleman in the old-time meaning of the word. These men are becoming rarer, and he will be missed. -Randall O'Malley (Class of 1976)

We are saddened to see of Ian's passing. In the 4 years of pharmacy we shared, he was a stand up guy. Someone with a true sense of character. We always enjoyed when Ian would break into Gaelic after sharing couple beers with the class. After graduation it was a joy to stop in Whycocomagh and visit him at his pharmacy/grocery store in his early years as a pharmacy owner. His laugh and good nature was always part of our annual Pharmacy conferences. Through life one meets someone that you always remember, Ian was such a person. Bob and Janine Murray

Dear Shirley and family, I am sorry to hear of Ian's death. He was one of the very favourite people in the lives of the Dickie family....Bill,Thelma,Judy,John,Stephen and Christine. I guess we first met him because we were close friends with the MacAloney's or maybe it was because he worked with Jack MacKinnon who was also a family friend. My first summer job was working at White Cross Pharmacy with Ian and Jack. It was a job I loved because it was fun and we laughed a lot. Ian made the store such a happy place in which to work. Ian went to a concert where one of the performances was by Russian male dancers and he thought he should show Jack just how the Russian dancing was done. We heard the loud crashing of many glass bottles breaking as Ian's dancing attempt wrecked havoc in the dispensary. It was not uncommon for me to be sprayed with water from a water pistol while I was doing my work by a fun loving Ian hiding in a different aisle of the store. My father went to bed at ten or ten thirty on most nights. My mother would not go to bed until her children were safely home from dates and I usually stayed out until one or later on weekends. When I arrived home long after midnight there would be mom and Ian watching the late movie and eating apple pie or some other goodies. Mom loved the company and probably thought of Ian as another son. We all thought he was wonderful! May the many lovely memories you have of your husband, father and grandfather help you to get through this difficult time. The world has lost a special man. Judy(Dickie)Rondeau
