Lawrence, Sheila Diane - Age 74, Canso. It is with profound sadness to share that our dear mother Sheila passed away at home on Thursday, March 25th, 2021 from ongoing medical issues.
Sheila was born on April 14, 1946 to Leonard and Anne MacKinnon in Canso. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Samuel Lawrence. She leaves behind her two sons, who will miss her beyond words, Christopher, Whitehead and Brent, Queensport. Sheila was so proud of her grandchildren, Sarah and Rayden and was always talking about their accomplishments. Her two remaining siblings; Brent MacKinnon (Marie) and Elaine Bushell (Stephen), both of Truro, will miss her dearly, but she has now joined Kenneth, Pearl, Vidi, Winnie, Leo and many extended family members. Her fondness displayed toward her nieces and nephews will always be remembered.
Sheila attended Canso High School and was a passionate learner. After graduating high school, Sheila attended St. Martha’s School of Nursing and received her Radiology Certification and worked in many locations including the IWK Hospital, Labrador City and Canso. She had also worked teaching school for a period of time in her hometown. She returned to a medical career, working in Administration at the Canso Medical Clinic and eventually became the Administrator for Eastern Memorial Hospital for many years. She always made her daily visits to the patient, supporting with kindness, reassortment and love. She was a Justice of the Peace for the Canso area and enjoyed meeting people and chatting while signing their documents, or performing countless marriages over the years.
Sheila studied music as a young girl and received her Certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto. She started playing the organ at All Saints Church at the age of eight. She was a dedicated community volunteer. She was Treasurer with the 5th Canso Scouts. She was committed to Lay Ministry for the Parish of All Saints by the Sea and enjoyed her Church work right up to the end of her life, holding various position in the Church, with the Anglican Church Women, the Altar Guild and for decades she was All Saints Church - Canso Vestry Clerk.
She enjoyed doing crafts, knitting and making baby quilts for the numerous extended family and friends. All generations have been on the receiving end of these loving gifts that they will now cherish for years to come.
Anyone who knew Sheila, knew that she was a kind, loving and caring woman, who saw the good in everyone. She supported community events, groups and often could be seen opening her heart and wallet to support every fund-raiser she was aware of. The community, family and friends will miss her more than words can say.
