Longobardi, Margaret Mildred (Gillis), 89 - Guysborough/ Halifax. We announce with sadness the passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Margaret Mildred Longobardi on Monday, January 19, 2009 at Parkstone Nursing Home, Halifax. Born in Port Hood, Mildred was the daughter of the late Alexander Chisholm Gillis and Catherine MacDonald. She was forever proud of her upbringing in New Waterford and of her Cape Breton roots. Mildred graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing, Montreal, Que., and throughout her life was the consummate caregiver, taking joy in the comfort she could offer her patients. She enjoyed and excelled at many hobbies especially sewing and painting. A long-time resident of Guysborough, Mildred was predeceased by her husband George in 1992; son, David in infancy. She is survived by children, Michael (Shirley), Zita, Paul, Phyllis, Mary, Gerard (Jo-anne); grandchildren, Rochelle, Alex (Kristy), Marlo (fiancé Rob) , Amy, Patrick, Lauren, David, Hilary and great-grandchildren, Avery and Kendelynn. Loving sister-in-law, Anna (Longobardi) Laffin.
The family will receive friends and colleagues at Snow’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St, Halifax on Wednesday, January 21 from 6 - 9 p.m. Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 22 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough, from 2- 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Guysborough on Friday, January 23 at 2:00 p.m. with Fr. Allan MacPhie officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Mildred may be made to a charity of choice.
