With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Fred Carter of Halifax and formerly of Mulgrave, a loving son, brother and uncle, who passed away on Tuesday May 19, 2009 at the Victoria General Hospital Palliative Care Unit after a courageous battle with cancer. His positive attitude and fiesty spirit during his final days were an inspiration to family, friends, and hospital staff. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of Florence Carter and the late Jerry Carter. Fred grew up in Mulgrave and always considered it home. He graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University with a Degree in Commerce with a major in Accounting. He traveled after to see the world and spent four years teaching English in Taiwan. Fred had a great passion for golf a sport he dearly loved and excelled in, and spent many days in his childhood golfing from dawn to dusk. He touched the hearts of all who knew him with his sense of humor and kindness. He is survived by his mother Florence (Diggins) Carter and his sister Shelly and nephews Tyler and Alex Justason. Also survived by his grandfather Arthur Diggins and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father Frederick (Jerry) Carter and grandparents Owen and Ida (Gillis) Carter and grandmother Leota (Warren) Diggin.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday May 22, 2009 at the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be on Saturday May 23, 2009 at 1 p.m. in St Lawrence Church in Mulgrave. Fr. Allan MacPhie officiating. Burial in St. Lawrence cemetery. Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred`s memory can be made to the St. Lawrence Cemetery fund, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Palliative Care Unit 7A of QEII Health Sciences Centre, VG site. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com .
