FOUGERE, Simon Aloysius — 86, of Creignish, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2009, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in Frankville, Simon was a son of the late John Simon and Mary Angela (Melong) Fougere and the beloved husband of the late Mary Frances (Decoste) Fougere, the love of his life. Simon was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University in 1948, and a member of Stella Maris Parish, Creignish. He was a Second World War veteran, past president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. He was also past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge and a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd degree member Cape Nova Council 7924, and a 4th degree member of Monsignor Hugh Gillis Council 0798. His favourite past-time was working in his yard and being actively involved in the community. He was jokingly referred to as the Mayor of Creignish. Simon knew everyone and was well respected by everyone he came in contact with. Simon is survived by daughter, Simone (Ron) Appleton; sons, John (Lorraine) and Blaise (Carol); sister, Edna (Benoit); grandchildren, David, Denise (Richard), Shaun (Loren), Jeffrey, Jenna (Aaron) and Renee; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Lauren, also numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Theresa, Clothilda, Edith, Mazie and Rita; brothers, Russell, Vincent and Wilfred. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., a Legion service will be held at 7 p.m. both in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, at 11 a.m. in Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Creignish with Father Hughie D. MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
