Obituary
Please share a memory of Ronald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
GEORGE, Ronald Richard - 62, Halifax formerly of Canso. It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our husband, father, and brother, who died on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Born in Canso, Ron was the son of the late Donald and Ethel (Bennett) George.
Ron moved to Halifax six years ago but his heart always remained in Canso. From his early days as an independent truck driver to his many years as Manager of the Canso Arena, Ron was an active member of the community. Following in his father’s footsteps, he spent over 30 years as a member of the Canso Volunteer Fire Department. Ron devoted nearly 20 years of his life as a town councilor and proudly presided as Mayor of Canso for six years. Despite his love of public service, his time was always dedicated to the smooth operation of the Canso Arena. A proud man, Ron devoted his time to ensuring all; from the young minor hockey players to “old timers”, like his buddy Babe, enjoyed their time on the ice. From cold mornings at the rink to late nights enjoying a hot drink with the “coffee club”, Ron was a formidable socializer. Always one for “chewing the fat” or simply talking about days gone by, he was never short of a good story or opinion.
He is survived by his wife Alma (Dumaresque); sons Ron (Paula) and Cory (Catherine), Halifax; brother, Calvin (Norma), Maitland and sister Lorraine (Munroe), Red Deer, Alberta. The family is appreciative and thankful for the wonderful care he received during his time at the Scotia Nursing Home in Beaverbank.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A celebration of Ron’s life will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2009 in Canso United Baptist Church. Followed by burial in Fourth Hill Cemetery with Rev. David Wheeler officiating. Family flowers only please, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Homes Ltd., Canso. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
