97, Canso, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family in Canso Seaside Manor on Saturday, March 28, 2009. She was a daughter of Alexander and Alice (Newell) Ryan.
Gertie was born and raised in Canso. For most of her life she was a homemaker who loved sewing and all other forms of crafts. She dedicated much of her later life to helping care for her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Joseph (Grace) Walsh, John Gillis, Clarice (Albert) Avery, and Wanda (David) Myatt, as well as her brother, Ellsworth "Braz" Ryan, all from Canso, and her grandchildren, Karen, Nancy, Douglas, Tina, Tanya and Melinda; 11 great-grand children, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gertrude was predeceased by her first husband, William "Bill" Walsh and second husband, John Gillis, as well as son, Wayne Gillis and her siblings, Peg, Harold, Leo, Hector, Sadie, Helen, Mary, John, Marie, Florence, Dorothy, Tom, Alice, and Nelson. In keeping with Gertie's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 1, from 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home in Canso. Funeral will be held in Star of the Sea Parish on Thursday, April 2, at 11 a.m. Interment to take place at a later date.
