Hattie, James Fraser – Sylvan Valley, Antigonish Co., born July 2nd, 1920 died June 13th, 2009 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Mulgrave, Guysborough Co. to the late Howard and Emma Amelia Hattie. Jim served in the Second World War with the rank of L/Bdr in the R.C.A. After the war he went to Flin Flon, Manitoba in 1946 with his younger brother Bill. After a number of years of working in Flin Flon he and Bill took jobs with a variety of metal extracting companies in Quebec and Ontario as well as a number of small companies in New Brunswick.
After the death of Bill in 1975, he continued to work. He finished his work for the Mattabi Company when he and his crew of 5 reached the 9000 Safe Man-shifts mark in the Mill Department and were presented with a safety award. He retired in 1985 and after a short stay with his sister Kay, he bought a house in Maryvale where he lived until 2005 when with the aid of some nephews he moved into the apartment where he was living at the time of his death.
At the time of his death only his brother Roy (Winnie) and family, and a number of nephews and nieces survive. He is survived by Jean Collins and family, Ruth Jarvis and family, Earl Einarson and family, Roy and George Einarson, Joan Freeman and family and Emma (Robert) Comeau. He is also survived by Florence Zawislak Winnipeg, Man., Allen Hattie in Brandon, Jack Hattie and family in Whitemouth, Man and Sylvia Harasen and family in Thunder Bay, Ont. Jim was predeceased by siblings John Edwin Randall, Mary Ellen, Philip Douglas, Charles Alexander, Wilma Frances, Alfred Norman, Katherine Eileen, Edith Margaret, George Wesley and William Howard. Jim loved a number of things. He spent several years doing games and jigsaw puzzles. He would travel down to Mulgrave every 2 weeks for cards with Roy and George and expected to see them the following week as well.
Many thanks to the nurses and Doctors Michael MacKenzie and Glenn Gallivan for their care and tending of Jim during this time. There will be no visitation Cremation has taken place. Jim's funeral will be at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 20th, 2009 in Trinity United Church, Mulgrave with Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating. Burial in Trinity United Church Cemetery. Family flowers only.
