Please share a memory of Archibald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MacKAY, Archibald Caleb "Archie" - 64, Whycocomagh. Our hearts are heavy with the passing of our beloved Archie. He quietly and peacefully left us on Friday, February 1, 2008, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, after a very long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Hays River, Inverness Co., he was was the second son of D.J. and Catherine (MacKinnon) MacKay.
Archie was employed as manager of Quality Cleaners, Port Hawkesbury, for a number of years, and as a meat cutter in Whycocomagh, until his retirement. Archie's love of life, sense of humour, extraordinary determination and strength was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. He was a member of Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh. He loved playing cribbage, music, horse racing, darts, gardening, and his little friend Midge, who provided many laughs for him in the past year. He is survived by his wife, Sheila (MacKeigan); sons, John (Alice), Ivan, both of Whycocomagh; sisters, Marilyn (Alex) MacIver, River Denys; Anna (Harvey) Timmons, Port Hawkesbury; Florence (Dougie) Timmons, Port Hastings; Laura (Jake) MacDonald, Broad Cove; Norma (Jimmy) MacDonnell, Inverness; Audrey MacKay (Martin Neynens), Lower Sackville; Elaine MacKay (Lawrence Cameron), Inverness; brother, Bob, Dartmouth; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by brother, J.D.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 2-9 p.m. Monday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Stewart United Church, with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Burial in Stewartdale Cemetery at a later date. A very special thank you to Dr. Belen and Dr. Bernie of Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Dr. Gowan and Dr. McCormick of Cape Breton Regional Hospital, and the nursing staff and palliative care unit of Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, who were not only very kind to Archie but also to his family. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Central Inverness County Palliative Care Society or a charity of choice.
