MacKINNON, Rory Allan "Roddie" - 84, Whycocomagh, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2007, in Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Born July 19, 1923, in Rosedale, Inverness Co., he was a son of the late Hugh and Jessie (MacLean) MacKinnon.
Roddie was a carpenter in the Whycocomagh area working with his brother-in-law, Charlie, for over 30 years. He was an active member of Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh, and an honourary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 123, Whycocomagh. Roddie was awarded the Nova Scotia Fire Services Long Service medal and the Government of Canada Fire Services Exemplary Service medal for almost 40 years of service with the Whycocomagh Volunteer Fire Department. All those who knew him were always assured of a big smile and his unwavering greeting, "Nice day today", no matter what the weather. Surviving are sisters, Sara MacMillan, Squamish, B.C.; Chrissie MacMillan, Whycocomagh; niece, Catherine (Len) Doucet, Squamish, B.C.; nephews, Byron (Cathy) MacMillan, South Rawdon, Hants Co.; Lorne (Marion) MacMillan, Elmsdale, Hants Co.; 11 grandnieces and grandnephews; one great-grandniece. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald M.; sister, Annie Marg; brothers-in-law, Lauchie MacMillan and Charlie MacMillan.
Visitation will be held 2-9 p.m. today in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Stewart United Church, Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Burial in Stewartdale Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Stewart United Church or a charity of your choice.
