Please share a memory of Wilma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
LAMEY- MONAHAN, Wilma … 87, Dartmouth (Port Hawkesbury)Passed away Sunday September 23rd 2007 at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Huntley Grant and Gertrude (nee MacDonald) and her beloved stepmother Margaret (Martin) Grant.
Wilma loved life, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her many friends, young and old. And they loved her.
She was pre-deceased by her husband John Lamey (1958), her son John Grant Lamey (1969) and her second husband Arthur Monahan (1979), her sister Shirley Freer, brothers Donny Grant and Huntley Grant, and brothers-in-law Peter Freer and Owen Innes.
Wilma was a social and community activist through most of her adult life and was a strong advocate for women’s rights. She was involved with the Pictou County Women’s Centre, the Help Line and the Leeside Society. Before the existence of such organizations she opened her home to numerous women and children in need of a safe haven.
Wilma had a keen interest in politics. She is an Honourary Life Member of the Nova Scotia NDP. She served the NDP in many capacities … fundraiser, putting up signs, her home as campaign headquarters, hosting numerous leaders in her home. Right until the end, Wilma would watch “Question Period”, read daily and weekly papers to stay abreast of local, provincial and national issues.
She was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed literature by Atlantic authors.
In the last few decades gardening became her passion and many people walked by her property just to look at the fabulous array of flowers, berries and vegetables. Many enjoyed the bounty from her garden in the form of pickles, jams and jellies.
She is survived by her children: Billie Lamey Hatchette; Joanne Lamey, Robin MacKinnon (Alan), Kevin, Alan (Rita) and Martin (Valerie). Her grandchildren: Dr. Kathy Lamey, Dawn (MacLeod), Nathan and Leah Lamey, Scott, John and Andrew MacKinnon and great grand-children Emma, Katy and Chayce (MacLeod). Wilma is also survived by her sister Marion Innes.
