McCARTHY, Leo George - 62, We'koqma'q First Nation, formerly of Carbonear, N.L., passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 6, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit of Aberdeen Regional Hospital, New Glasgow. He was a son of the late Leo and Emma (Ash) McCarthy. Leo worked at Wabush Mines as a millwright Mechanic for 15 years and then he moved to Nova Scotia and was employed with Michelin Tire as an electromechanical technician. He was very involved with sports, particularly ball and hockey as a coach, referee and umpire. He also raced cars at Riverside Speedway. Leo volunteered many hours at the elementary and secondary schools in We'koqma'q, helping and designing their websites. Leo loved to play Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny for the school children. He is survived by sons, Paul (Kathleen Welton), Amherst; Barry (Stacey Maguire), Stewiacke; their mother, Idella (Fahey) McCarthy, Carbonear, N.L.; sisters, Anna Mary (Dave) Follett, Labrador City, N.L.; Phyllis (Joe) Fry, Conception Bay South, N.L.; Ruth (George) Coish, Lewisporte, N.L.; Peg (Eric) Davis, Pasadena, N.L.; Frances (Bill) Nichols, Truro; Linda Parsons, Port-Aux-Basques, N.L.; Tina (Harold) Slade, Brooks, Alta.; brothers, Jim (Marilyn), Pictou; Fred (Laura), Fox Creek, Alta.; Steve (Marge), Port-Aux-Basques, N.L.; Larry, Mount Pearl, N.L.; Tony (Monica), Fort McMurray, Alta.; Kevin (Penny), Clarenville, N.L.; grandchildren, Christopher, Kyle, Skylar; sister-in-law, Helen MacCallum, Pictou; good friends, Rachael Phillips and her daughter Jessie, We'koqma'q; also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother-in-law, Lloyd Chubbs, and nephew, William Lloyd Chubbs. Leo would especially like to thank the community of We'koqma'q for their kindness and support through his trying time, Thank You (Wela'lioq).
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-9 p.m. Friday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, with Father Bernie MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made in Leo's memory to Canadian Cancer Society or Aberdeen Palliative Care Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
