Abbott, John Andrew, 66, Port Hawkesbury - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Andrew Abbott. John passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2012 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston after a courageous battle with cancer. John kept his positive spirit and sense of humor despite his illness. John grew up in South Bar, Cape Breton and was the second son of the late John and Selina Abbott. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carol Ann (Buchanan), his son, David (Stephanie), North Vancouver; his treasured grandchildren, Leah and Quinn, his brothers, Ray, South Bar, and Derrick (Audra), Coldbrook; plus many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by his brother, Dennis. John served in the Royal Canadian Air Force Provost Corps (Military Police) for a number of years before relocating to Port Hawkesbury to work at the AECL Heavy Water Plant and finally for the Government of Nova Scotia where he enjoyed his 25 year career as a road transport inspector. John was a member of St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury, the Causeway Shrine Club, the Masonic Lodge (Royal Arch Keystone Chapter # 43, the Solomon Lodge # 46) and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 43, Port Hawkesbury. John was a devoted husband, father; grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all. John’s passion was his family, fishing and time spent at the cottage with good friends. John will be forever missed and loved by his family, friends and co-workers. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. A Masonic service will take place at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Royal Canadian Legion service at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held from St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury on Thursday, January 26 at 11 a.m. with Nancy Corrigan, D.M. officiating. Burial will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to St. Mark’s United Church, Strait Richmond Palliative Care or the Shriners Children’s Travel Fund.
