ASHE (Daye), Hattie Eugena-90, Monastery, went home to glory on Saturday, July 7, 2007, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, surrounded by her family and Rev. Pauline Coffin. Born in Sunnyville, Guysborough Co., she was a daughter of the late John and Laura (Gero) Skinner.
She obtained her elementary education at Guysborough Academy and went on to completion in Boston, Mass. Mom began her teaching profession in Upper Big Tracadie then Lincolnville and Sunnyville, ending her 30 year teaching career at Mary E. Cornish School, Lincolnville, as principal for the last five years. Mom was very active in church and community affairs. She served a 38 year term as Tracadie Baptist Church Clerk, Superintendent and teacher of Sunday school for 30 plus years, Counselor of Baptist Youth Fellowship for 22 years, President and co-founder of the Ladies Auxiliary for 30 plus years and she was a counselor for Black United Front, spearheading community projects as well as obtaining a community center through government grants. Mom was also a recipient of the Community Service Award, Foster Parent Award, The Casket Profile, Upper Big Tracadie Education Committee, and Tracadie United Baptist Church Ladies Auxiliary, 50 year award from AUBA Women’s Institute and numerous other awards. Mom dearly loved to cook and bake and setting her table for company gave her great pleasure. Her strong faith, kind heart and generosity sustained her throughout her life and she was a source of inspiration to anyone and everyone who knew her. Her church was her rock.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; biological daughter, Linda Izzard, Halifax; chosen daughters, Lillian Desmond, Upper Big Tracadie; Norma Ashe, Monastery; Dianne (Leo) Izzard, New Glasgow; chosen sons, William Skinner, Toronto; Wilfred (Lorraine) Reddick, Antigonish; Douglas (Gail) Jones, Antigonish; Robert Desmond, Halifax; sisters, Elizabeth Borden, Halifax; Dorothy Skinner, Toronto; Pearl Skinner, New York; Maude MacLean, New Glasgow; Rita (Bill) Ashe, Antigonish; Ella Skinner, Antigonish; brother, Thomas (Shirley) Skinner, Boylston; numerous foster children and God children; special great-grandson, Jonathan, Ottawa; 41 grandchildren; 80 great-grandchildren; 23 great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, William Daye; son, Brian Daye; chosen son, Alexander Jones; brothers, Earl, Norman, Wilfred, John and Chester and stepmother, Mrs. Lillian Skinner. Special thank you to Dr. Steeves, Dr. Hickey and the nurses in the Progressive Care Unit for going the extra step to keep mom comfortable. Also special thanks to V.O.N. and home care, mom’s special angels, you know who you are.
Visitation will take place at her residence 255 Route 16, Monastery, after 2 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Tracadie United Baptist Church, with Rev. Pauline Coffin officiating. Burial in Sunnyview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Upper Big Tracadie United Baptist Church Building Fund or Ladies Auxiliary.
