LEONARD, Minnie Alice - Age 86 of Antigonish and formerly of West Bay, Inverness Co., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, in the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in West Bay she was a daughter of the late Creighton and Annie Mae (MacMillan) Leonard. Minnie was ahead of her time. She moved to New Jersey in the 1950s worked two nursing jobs and raised her son, Robert, all on her own. She was ever ready for the next adventure and always had an extra seat at the table for anyone who might show up at her door. Nothing brought her greater joy than the time she spent with her grandchildren Dana and Peter, except for maybe a gin martini on a golf course. After a very successful career in nursing, she spent her retirement involved in every activity her grandchildren participated in, traveling with friends and in her home in West Bay on Cape Breton Island, where she grew up, and her family still lived. She told everyone that West Bay was the most beautiful place in the world and they all knew that they had a place to stay when they came for a visit. She was everything to her grandchildren and will be missed by many in both New Jersey and Nova Scotia. Surviving are her grandchildren, Dana and Peter (Colette) Wise of New Jersey, USA; her brothers, Mitchell (Marguerite) and Donald, of West Bay. Her sisters-in-law, Madeline, Hamilton, Ont.; Tena, St. Peter's; Beverly, West Bay; Peggy, Antigonish; brother-in-law, Arvid Ferguson Hamilton, Ont.; and many nieces and nephews across Canada. Minnie was predeceased by her son, Robert Wise; her sisters, Jean Cresine & Frances Ferguson; brothers, Ross, CR, Herbert, Alexander, Walter, Lloyd, Lawrence and Ewen Leonard. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at a later date from West Bay United Church with burial to follow in West Bay Cemetery.
