Doreen was a faithful member of the Hootin'nannies, an organization based in Port Hawkesbury that was a chapter of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The,m aim was and is to raise funds for the Grandmothers in Africa who are raising their grandchildren because the parents have died from HIV/AIDS. Over 7 yrs our group raised $25,000 to mhelp these Grandmothers provide food, shelter, school fees, grief counselling, agriculture needs and so on. Doreen was a willing and dedicated volunteer in that pursuit. The Hootin'nannies and the Grandmothers of Africa whose life was made easier by Doreen's efforts are eternally grateful.

Carole, Michelle, Shaun and Laurie. I'm so sad to hear of your mom's passing. It's been many years since I've seen Doreen but my memory of her is of a woman of great class, wisdom, strength and nurturing. Always a calm demeanor and interest in all her children's activities. It sounds like she continued to live her life to the fullest...and I'm not surprised. May your memories comfort you and bring you the peace in knowing she lived a full and meaningful life with you all in her life. Be strong and have peace in knowing she walks beside you every step you take.

Sincere condolences to Doreen's family. Growing up I was a neighbour of Doreen's grandmother, Mrs. MacLennan and Doreen's aunt, Mary Waechter. I often noticed Doreen visiting them and realized she was a thoughtful person. Chatting with her in later years at Mass or church functions my first impression was correct. I am unable to attend her wake & funeral but you are all in my thoughts & prayers.

As I said here in my living room in my home in Halifax, I am deeply mindful that I have a home and a life and a career today because of people like Doreen. I know that there are hundreds of people who have the same or similar stories that I do , Doreen saved our lives because of the care, attention and support she provided to all her students, but in particular, students that need it something above and beyond from the teachers in order for them to succeed. I have a life and a future, as do hundreds of others, because of the Doreen. I can never repay her kindness and support except by trying to afford the same generosity to others,it is my hope that all who have been blessed to have had interactions with Doreen will do the same.Thank you Doreen, bless you, and Rest In Peace.

Dear Carole, Michele, Shawn and Laurie, It is with great sadness that I learned last night that your beautiful Mom's soul has gone to Heaven. Your Mom was a guiding force in my life and helped set the stage for me to become the person I am today. She took a special interest in me as a teenager and helped me to see my potential and guide me toward fulfilling it. She was tough and gentle with me at all times. I will never forget her. About five years ago, I visited her in Port Hawkesbury, with a ceramic dish in hand, seeking forgiveness for all the high jinks Michele and I got into as teenagers. She accepted my apology with a laugh and a hug and we had a wonderful time reminiscing over a cup of tea. Her forgiveness meant the world to me. I am currently in Ottawa for Robbie Kennedy's Celebration of Life which takes place this Sunday and am unable to come to the funeral. This saddens me greatly. Sister Michelle told me that your Mom would want me to be here and I think she is right. I will be thinking of each one of you over the coming days and will include Doreen in my prayers. Know that even though I am not there, I love you and want to thank you for welcoming me into your family. Michele - I will connect with you next week and love you vastly.

To the Beaton Family, I can't tell you how saddened I was to learn of your Mom's diagnosis last year, and of her recent passing. I first met your Mom in the 1980's when we served together on the board of the Nova Scotia Family and Child Welfare Association which later became the Nova Scotia Council for the Family. In later years we worked closely together when I became employed with the Children's Aid Society in Port Hawkesbury. She was an amazing woman. Her work ethic was beyond reproach. She was completely committed and dedicated to whatever role or task she undertook and possessed organizational skills that ran circles around the rest of us. She was kind, caring, and compassionate and inter-dispersed throughout that she had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and have fun. We did a lot of that but she always made sure the work got done!! Please accept condolences from Isabel and myself. No matter what age or stage we are at in our lives, it is never easy to say goodbye, especially to someone as special as a loving Mother. We hope you will all find the comfort and solace you need in the love and support of family and friends, and in the many memories you have of your Mom in happier times. We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. With deepest sympathy, Flo

Beaton Family. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. When ever our Mom would talk about when they first moved to Port Hawkesbury your mom was part of the story. When our family lived on the bottom of Nepean st. Mom would say that your family had just moved in next and your mom still didn't have an ironing board and needed a dress ironed. She ask my mother ( Sheila ) if she could press the dress for her. Mom was very tiny back then but it seemed your mom was even smaller. Mom always said that when she tried to put your moms dress over the ironing board the waist was too small to fit around the board!!! I know this is a silly story but the story amazed my mom for years and I thought you would like it. A story that happened so many years ago when all these strangers moved to the booming town and remained acquaintances for decades. Sorry for your loss. Murphy Family
