PATERSON, Gordon Hill – We regret to announce the death of Gordon Hill Paterson, 94 of Port Hawkesbury in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish on Wednesday, December 12, 2018. Gordon was born in Durban, South Africa on April 23, 1924.
Towards the end of WWII, at age 20, Gordon served with the South African Forces in Egypt and Italy. He lived in Natal, South Africa before moving to Bulawayo, Rhodesia in 1952. He moved with his wife Bobbie and two small boys, Ian (4) and Roger (2), his third son Tim was born later in Rhodesia. Gordon could turn his hand at fixing anything, cars, electrical appliances, etc. He built his own home in Bulawayo laying 1000 bricks a night when he came home from work. He worked as Chief Mechanical Engineer on the Rhodesian Railways until his retirement. On retirement they moved to Port Alfred, South Africa where Bobbie passed away. He married Laura Phyllis Dell in 1992 and they continued to live in Port Alfred, South Africa until moving to Port Hawkesbury in 2002.
He was a very active man who enjoyed many pastimes, making and flying gliders, tennis, fishing, golf and sailing. Gordon made the yacht The Fireball which he crewed for Roger and together won the South African championships three years in a row. He was predeceased by his sons, Ian and Tim.
In Port Hawkesbury he continued his hobby of faceting gemstones and many of his family have beautiful jewelry showcasing his gems. He researched the Bluenose and made models of this famous sailing ship in his workshop in the basement which he took to craft markets.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Laura; son, Roger (Sandy); daughters-in-law, Irene and Theresa; step-daughters, Cheryl (Dennis) and Shirley (Americo); grandchildren, Ryan, Mark, Alisha, Charise, Andrew, Heather, Dale, Robert, Daniella and Graham; 9 great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 19 from St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury with Nan Corrigan DM officiating. Burial at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
