MACINNIS, Irwin - Age 70, Port Hawkesbury. It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Irwin MacInnis on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. Irwin was born on February 3, 1948 in Antigonish; he was a son of the late Hugh Gillis and Florence Isobel (Irwin) MacInnis. He was pre-deceased by his former wife, Sandra (née Gillis). He is survived by their son, Mark; grandchildren, Michael, Samuel, Ruth and Caleb; brother, David (Lauren Racicot). Irwin began his career at the Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Heavy Water Plant, before moving to the Stora Kopparberg Pulp and Paper Plant, both in Point Tupper. He then worked with his father at H.G. MacInnis Fuels Ltd., which he later purchased from his father upon Hugh’s retirement. Upon his own retirement from the family business, Irwin worked in Alberta and Northwest Territories for several years, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed and that provided him with many stories with which to entertain family and friends. Time spent with family and friends was what Irwin most treasured and enjoyed, and he could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. Visits with his son and grandchildren were greatly anticipated and provided special enjoyment. Consistent with his tendency to help others when he could, Irwin donated his body to Dalhousie Medical School’s Human Body Donation Program to assist in the education of the next generation of surgeons and healthcare professionals. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 13 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville Street, Port Hawkesbury. A ceremony celebrating Irwin’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 14, also in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. A lunch, hosted by the Catholic Women’s League, will follow the Thursday ceremony. It will take place at 11 am at the Evergreen Senior Citizens Club, 37 Embree Street, Port Hawkesbury. Internment will take place at a future date in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Port Hawkesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irwin’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or a charity of your choice.
