BROPHY, John Francis- Age 82, Mulgrave died Friday, December 16, 2016 St Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born April 30, 1934 he was the son of the Late John P. and Ella Mae (Jellow) Brophy.
Francis is survived by his sisters, Jean, Anne (Donald Williams), Mary (Joe Miles), brothers James (Theresa), Vincent (Brenda), all of Mulgrave and many nieces and nephews. Francis is predeceased by his brother-in-law, Michael MacKinnon (Jean).
In his early years Francis completed training and qualified as a Trained Militiaman (Armour, Artillery and Infantry). He then worked for many years for Acadia Fisheries in Mulgrave. He continued to work for the fisheries in Halifax after the loss of the plant in Mulgrave. He also worked for the Town of Mulgrave for several years. In his later years, Francis spent most of his time cutting wood both for income and his own use. His work took a toll on both Francis and his vehicles. Francis enjoyed a simple life style. He treasured family, friends, good food, animals and music.
His greatest enjoyment came from his years of volunteering for the Ceilidh’s, especially the Ceilidh’s at the Creamery. He was honoured by the Volunteer Award bestowed upon him by the Creamery organization for his volunteer efforts. He took great pleasure in fiddle music and was always quick with high praise for the weekly performers from near and far. He also enjoyed going to bingo. He cared a great deal for animals. He was known to rescue animals in need. All those who knew Francis were very aware of his affection for his kitten "Puss".
