BERNARD, Walter Charles – 67, We’koqma’q First Nation passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014, in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Born in Eskasoni, he was a son of the late Charles Andrew and Annie Mae (Sylliboy) Bernard. Walter was a member of the Elder’s Council and a member of the Cape Breton Chapter of the Relay for Life. He also was a member of the United Ostomy Association, Cape Breton Chapter and a champion for Native Rights. Surviving are his daughters, Ericka (Fabian) Toney, Amy (G.T.), both of We’koqma’q; Michelle Marshall, Chapel Island; sons, Jonathon Marshall, Chapel Island; Andrew Phillip, We’koqma’q; sister, Julena Bernard, We’koqma’q; brothers, Alan (Juliana), John Wayne and Peter, all of We’koqma’q; grandchildren, Dylan, Evander, Lara and George Jr.; great-granddaughter, Kaylan Rae; godchildren, Linda (Barry) Crowe, We’koqma’q; Vanessa (Freddy) Bernard, Alberta; Dominique Paul, We’koqma’q. He was predeceased by his grandson, Raegan; brothers, Lawrence "Lunch", Charles "Chuckie" and Freddy;godchild, Donald Bernard, We’koqma’q. Visitation after 4 p.m. Sunday in the Multi-Purpose Building, 160 Reservation Road, We’koqma’q First Nation.
