Bennett, Donald Shirley “Shirl” – 75, Canso, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 18, 2010 in Canso Seaside Manor with his family by his side. Born in Hazel Hill, he was a son of the late Dorothy (Bennett) Pembroke. Shirl worked as a truck driver for H.B. Nickerson & Sons, then National Sea Products before retiring in 1990. He was a kind and gentle man who was always there to help others. He enjoyed trout fishing and camping at Lake Ainslie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Dorothy “Dot” (Richard), Canso; sisters, Mary (Harold) Dort and Sheila (Melvin) Rhynold, Canso; Joan (Aubrey) Edwards, Halifax; brothers, Clarence (Judy) Swaine, Halifax; Gordon (Donna) Swaine, Dartmouth; aunt, Ruby Swaine, Canso; uncle Gerald (Florence) Bennett, Canso; many extended family members including, Jennifer (Jason) Rennie, Beaver Bank and Kelly Murphy, Halifax. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruby Horne. Cremation has taken place.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Friday, October 22 and 9-10:45 a.m. Saturday, October 23 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral mass will be held 11a.m. Saturday in Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso with Father Andrew Gillies officiating. Burial in the Parish cemetery. Donations in Shirl’s memory may be made to Canso Seaside Manor, Eastern Memorial Hospital Palliative Care, Star of the Sea Building Fund or a charity of choice.
