Bernard-Phillips Cpl. (E 4) Clint Joseph- 24 of We’Koqma’q First Nation died Sunday October 8, 2006 on Jacobs Mountain. Born in Inverness he was a son of Clare Phillips and Clayton Bernard We’Koqma’q. Clint graduated from Waycobah First Nation School in 2000 and joined the United States Marine Corps, July 7, 2000. He did his 13 week basic training in Parris Island, SC, his duty station was Camp Pendleton, San Diego then Marine Combat Training at 29 Palms, California. He earned his Rifle Sharp Shooters Badge, Pistol Expert Badge, and Certificate of Appreciation. He worked as an Administration Clerk for the Marine Corps before serving in Afghanistan and Iraq where he was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, The Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, The Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (w/1 star), the National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and Navy Unit Commendation. He received an honorable discharge (the highest possible discharge) from U.S.M.C. July 10, 2004. He took an active part in the Waycobah Remembrance Day Services and worked on job placement funded by U.C.C.B. known as MYRACL ( Mi’kmaw Youth Recreation and Active Circle for Living). Prior to his death he worked for the Waycobah Band as a carpenter’s laborer and was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, Waycobah. Surviving are son Sean Abrahm Joseph Googoo (4 years) and his mother Brenda Googoo; brother Colt Noel Bernard-Phillips, New Brunswick; chosen brother Jarvis Googoo, Halifax; maternal grandmother Mary Ellen Phillips, We’Koqma’q; aunts Ida Marshall; Magit Poulette both of We’Koqma’q; Gloria Marshall, Gail Marshall, Kim Julian, Judy (Albert) Julian all of Paq’tnkek; Christine Googoo, Krista Thompson, Flo Young all of Eskasoni; Lillian Marshall, Potlotek; uncles Rod Philips, We’Koqma’q; George Junior (Josie ) Marshall, Danny Marshall, both of Potlotek; Robert” Rocket” Marshall, Paq’tnkek; granduncle, Grand Chief Ben W. (Marie) Sylliboy, We’Koqma’q; godparents James Googoo Sylliboy and Angela Googoo; godchild Emily Mae Googoo; numerous cousins and friends. He was predeceased by a baby brother Cimon Jordan; uncles Richard (Emily) Phillips; Colin Marshall; aunts Mary Marshall in infancy and Caroline Phillips; paternal grandparents George and Eunice (Bernard) Marshall; maternal grandfather Joseph Noel Phillips. Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. Thursday at the family residence, 200 Reservation Rd.. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Fr. Bernie MacDonald officiating, burial in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com “The biggest accomplishment I can think of is: Let me ask you this, how many people especially in Canada can say they helped liberate a people?
