BEATON, Josephine Isabel - 49, Port Hawkesbury, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 11, 2004, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by family. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of Jean McDougall and the late Edward McDougall. Jo was a graduate of Nova Scotia Teachers College and St. F.X. University. She taught school in Inverness and Richmond counties as a substitute teacher and was an adult educator for the Port Hawkesbury Literacy Council. An active member of St. Joseph's Parish, she served on parish council, was a religious and adult religious education teacher. Jo enjoyed visits with her family and friends, trips to Mabou, long walks and reading. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Damien; daughters, Lynne (Gavin) Maloney, Ottawa; Natalie (Matthew) Smith, Portland, Me.; sisters, Marie (David) MacLean, Howie Centre; Kimberly (Michael Morrisey), Beaver Bank; brother, Dan (Laura Muldoon), Ottawa. Besides her father, she was predeceased by infant daughter, Caroline.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today with a vigil service at 8:30 p.m., both in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, Father Bill Crispo officiating. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Mabou, at a later date. Donations in memory of Jo may be made to Canadian Cancer Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
