Thelma Gibson August 12, 1961 - July 6, 2022 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Thelma Gibson (August 12, 1961-July 6, 2022) at Saint Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish. To those of us blessed with knowing her well, she was an inspiration. When she was born in 1961 with Downs Syndrome, the doctors said that she would never walk, talk or be able to meaningfully participate in life. Boy were they wrong. Thelma was a firecracker! She was an excellent dancer and loved to sing, especially on stage. She loved performing, even if it was just by herself in the living room, when she thought no one else was watching. She was sweet but no pushover. Thelma was so incredibly quick witted and resourceful that she regularly made her family laugh out loud. She gave the best hugs. She loved unconditionally. She will be missed tremendously. Thelma moved to St Peters with her father and siblings after the death of her mother in 1968. She is predeceased by her parents Eileen and Harold Gibson and survived by her siblings Lillian (Jody) Chisholm, Troy; Gary (Barb), St. Peters; Margaret (Phil) Cyr, Kingston; Earl, Port Hawkesbury; Mary (Joe) Samson; Jean; John (Darlene); Albert (Maura); Carol; Joe (Diane), all from HRM as well as several cousins, nieces/nephews and grand nieces/nephews. When Thelma turned 18 she went to live with Lillian (sister), Jody and their young children. She lived with them for 38 years. Thelma is also survived by Lillian and Jody’s children, Joey (Stacey); Ken (Hanna); Marc (Mindy); and Nicole (Mark) MacPherson, who grew up with her and think of her as a sister. The family would like to thank the staff of the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home and the Palliative Care unit at St. Martha's Hospital for the tender care they provided Thelma and her family during her last days. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at a later date. Donations can be made in Thelma’s memory to the Freedom Foundation of Nova Scotia.
