Cameron, William MacKenzie – 89, Port Hood, Inv. Co. Passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 18, 2017 in Inverary Manor, Inverness.
Born on August 27, 1927; Willie was a son of the late Ira David and Annie (Watts) Cameron of Port Hood Island.
Willie grew up on the Island amongst his siblings and many cousins. He had a joyful childhood there, free to run the fields and hone his skills on the ocean.
Always a sports fan, Willie grew up playing ball in the summer and hockey in the winter. He and his friends taking advantage of frozen ponds and harbour ice for a game whenever they could. He learned the value of hard work doing his share of the chores, tending to the livestock, making hay, and learning to fish.
Willie attended the Margaret Anne Memorial School, Port Hood Island, after which he completed training as a diesel mechanic.
In 1955 he married his one true love, Anna. Together they moved to Thornhill, ON, where he was employed in his field.
In 1957 they returned to the island to build a home, start a family, and care for his aging father. Willie made fishing his career of choice from that time on.

He gave countless hours of his time to local sports, lobster suppers, church picnics and anything else that needed doing. He helped build and maintain the Islands outdoor rink and help keep the ice road to the mainland open and safe all winter.
Throughout the 70’s he coached boy’s hockey and played for the Chestico Gentlemen in the men’s league.
In the late 80’s Anna and Willie moved to a new house on the mainland. Willie continued to fish and enjoy hockey. He maintained his family home on the island, spending time there each summer, entertaining his grandchildren with stories of his youth.
