CARR, Helena Rebecca – 91, Manassette Lake, Guysborough Co. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Sister at home on Saturday, October 1, 2011. Born in Manassette Lake, she was a daughter of the late William and Annie (Mattie) Diggins. She was a very vibrant, independent lady, and was the rock of our lives. Never shy to voice her opinion, she was a leader not a follower, a wonderful storyteller and fine cook. You never left her house hungry or without a little more wisdom then when you entered. She was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadiens and a lifelong member and volunteer with the P.C. Party. She also volunteered with many organizations including the Red Cross, Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Ladies Aid. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. Her strong belief in God and the power of prayer sustained her throughout her life and until the end. She is gone now to be with the Lord and the love of her life, Ern. Special thanks to Palliative Care and Home Support, especially, Karen, Maureen and Beverly. Dr. Foley, Dr. Ranjini, Dr. Cooper and the nurses and staff at Guysborough Memorial Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest, son, Joseph Howard in infancy, parents, William and Annie (Mattie) Diggins, brothers, Alex and Thomas, sister, Lillian. She is survived by her children, Naomi DeCoste (Eugene), Manassette Lake; Kaye (Rod) MacDonald, Erinville; Mary (Pat) DeCoste, Frankville; son, Sam (Frances), St. Francis Harbour; Connie (Rick) Westendorf, Mission BC; sister, Annie Grady, St. Francis Harbour; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Carr, Manassette Lake; Ann Nolan, Boston, Mass. USA; grandchildren, Donnie, Julene, Jason, Jacqueline, Kim, Lisa, Rachel, Jonathan, Aaron, Chrystal, Tyler, Jimmy, Robyn, Jane, Zoe, special grandson, Robbie, and 21 great-grandchildren, exteneded family Joseph DeCoste and Joni Carr. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, October 2 and Monday, October 3 in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday October 4, from St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, St. Francis Harbour, with Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Memorial donation may be made to St. Francis Harbour Cemetery Fund, or to Guysborough Memorial Hospital.
