Obituary
Please share a memory of Phyllis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
We, the children of Phyllis May Dixon, want to express our gratitude for the life of our mother, who passed away Friday, March 29, 2019 age 94, at Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s. Born in Minasville, she was the second youngest child of George F. and A. Florence (Woodworth) Hamilton, and last remaining member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Adam Dixon, siblings, Edward, Abbie, Esther, Marion, Leslie, Isabel, Alberta, Grace, Clara, Sarah, Margaret, Francis, and Shirley, and son-in-law, Keith Jonas.
Mom is survived by her children, Michele Jonas, Grand Greve; Timothy (Dawn), Calgary; Alan (Alison), Calgary; Patricia (Ken) Minasville; and Carol (Daniel), Grand Greve. Also surviving her are grandchildren, Meredith, Bond, Jesse (Josy), Luke (Mariena), Matthew (Krysten), Joel, Adam, Eric, Abbie, Reid, and Olivia, great-grandchildren, Adrien, Lauren, Myla, Ellianna, Mikaela, great-great-grandchild, Daniel, and many nieces and nephews
Mom left Minasville to train as a stenographer in Amherst, and on completion, signed up with the Royal Canadian Air Force to help with the war effort. She was stationed at Rockcliffe, St.Hubert, Lethbridge, and ended her service at Gorsebrook in Halifax. She had the time of her life, and always cherished those years. When the war ended, she worked at TCA (Air Canada), Halifax, then transferred to Moncton, where she met, and married our father, Lloyd.
Five children later, Mom returned to the work world, first at Eaton’s, then for 17 years in the Treasury Dept. at City Hall, Moncton, where she made friendships she retained her entire life. She had many other work experiences, most notably at Gallery One, a job she truly loved.
Throughout her busy work life, while raising 5 children, Mom somehow found time for volunteer work. Active in Home and School, she participated on the local, provincial, and federal levels and was awarded a NB lifetime membership. Mom loved her church, Mountain View United and was active with United Church Women until age 84, when she moved to Grand Greve. She taught English to new immigrants with MAGMA, volunteered at the SPCA, canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Fund, volunteered with Parkinson’s Canada, and was an active participant in the Terry Fox Run for 20 years, because she had such admiration for that young man. Mom provided her children with a model of community service. She was a doer, helping out wherever she saw a need.
Our mother was a dreamer. She loved music, and was a prolific reader. Books transported her throughout her life, and she instilled the love of reading in her children. She travelled throughout Canada, to England, Scotland and Burkina Faso, West Africa with her sister Shirley, to the home of son Alan and his family.
Mom was an amazing woman, generous, kind, and a dedicated friend, who provided us with an example of how to live in the world. For that we will be forever grateful. Her last years have been tough ones, as Alzheimer’s robbed her of her ability to enjoy the things she loved best. We would like to extend our sincere thanks for the love and care Mom received from her home care workers and the nurses and caregivers at Richmond Villa in St. Peter’s. A special thank you to Marilyn Davison for her care, humour, and ongoing support to our family.
There will be a celebration of Mom’s life in August, in Minasville, her heart’s home.
