Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
DORT, Joseph Barry - 55, Guysborough. It is with great sadness that we, his family, announce the passing of Joseph Barry Dort, who left this earth for a better place May 21, 2007, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Malcolm Thomas and Mary Edna (Flaherty) Dort. He is survived by his soul mate and wife of 19 years, Karen; daughter, Maggie Dort; stepdaughter, Kimberly Hendsbee; stepson, Kelvin Howlett; foster daughter, Anne Marie Boyle; grandchildren, Elias and Abigail Hendsbee, and Dawson Howlett; foster granddaughters, Ashley and Amanda Cunningham; brothers, Malcolm, Newport Station; Michael (Mary), Dartmouth; John (Lorraine), Cambridge; sisters, Alice (Gordon) Pemberton, Windsor; Mary Roark, Dartmouth; Margaret (Lloyd) Barnes, Newfoundland; stepmother, Catherine Dort, Dartmouth; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by both of his parents. Joseph graduated from the Dalhousie College of Pharmacy in 1974. From there, he worked in Halifax and Cape Breton before opening his own pharmacy in Guysborough in 1976, where he worked until his illness in 2006. He was a dedicated pharmacist and loved both his work and the people. In his leisure time, he could always be seen with his walking stick and Tilley hat, and he was known as “the old man of the beach.” He also particularly loved kayaking and skiing. He dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren. We would like to thank Dr. Anita Foley, whose dedication was above and beyond; also, Dr. Barbara Bell and Dr. Ranjini. We would also like to thank the Guysborough Memorial Hospital nursing staff, as well as Maureen Long, Carmel Avery, Vonda Card and Karen Hoben. A special thank you to Bessie Reddick and Theresa O’Connor for all their gentle caring. Also, thank you to the many paramedics who made so many calls to our home. Thank you also to the hundreds of people who sent cards, prayers, your encouragement was very important to us.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation 1-4 and 5-9 p.m. today in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough.
