Obituary
Please share a memory of Lowell to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Percy passed peacefully at home on Sunday afternoon, February 1, with his family by his side. Born in Bathurst, NB, on August 31, 1920, he was the second of six childrenof the late Harrison and Floretta Ronalds. Percy is dearly loved and forever missed by his wife of 67 years, Alice (Lindsay), formerly of Bathurst as well as his four children, Jack (Maia), Port Hawkesbury; Gordon (Sue); Barb (Rick Jackson), Nanaimo, BC; and David at home. He is fondly remembered as Pop to his seven grandchildren – Tony and Bill Ronalds and their families in Calgary, Rebecca Tyre, London On., Matthew Jackson, Nanaimo, and Michael, James and Dan Ronalds and their families in British Columbia. Pop was also thrilled to have 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Marjorie, Campbellton and Grace, Calgary. Sadly, Percy recently lost two grandsons, Ryan Jackson, in September, 2013 and Gordie Ronalds, January, 2014. He is also predeceased by brothers, Harry and Glendon and his younger sister, Phyllis. At the age of 19, Percy joined the Carleton-York Regiment and was attached to the 13th Field Regiment as a motorcycle dispatch rider. He saw service in England, France, and Belgium but spent most of his career in Holland. Just a few years ago he was very pleased to be recognized by the Dutch government when he received a medal for his military service by the Dutch Ambassador. Following his return from overseas in 1945, Percy spent a brief time working for the railroad before he and Alice moved to Marathon, Ontario, where he was employed by Marathon Paper Corporation. Wishing to be closer to their New Brunswick roots, Percy took a position in 1961 at Nova Scotia Forest Products and lived in Port Hawkesbury since that time. He retired from the mill in 1985. Percy was a quiet, generous and unassuming man who put his family first. He generally read three newspapers a day and enjoyed reading military history. He loved to watch hockey and enjoyed his friends and all the camaraderie at Branch 43, Royal Canadian Legion. He visited daily at 3:00 PM to catch the news and have a beer with whoever happened to be there. Special thanks to Jean Marie Deveaux as well as the bar staff at the Legion who always took good care of Percy. Independence was always important to him and he prided himself on being able to drive his car up until eight weeks ago. A member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, there will be no service at this time. At Percy’s request, cremation has taken place. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, donations would be appreciated to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Building Fund or to Branch 43, Royal Canadian Legion. The family would like to thank Percy’s family physician, Dr Jim Collins for his many years of caring for our dad. We are truly appreciative as well to the health care professionals at Strait Richmond Hospital in addition to the dedicated home care nurses and palliative care support staff who helped Percy to remain at home as this was his last wish. Arrangements are under the care of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
