MacDonald, Alexander Stanley, 77 of Guysborough passed away peacefully on March 4, 2012 at the R. K. MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish. His 30 year battle with Parkinson’s disease has come to an end. Born July 4, 1934, he was the oldest son of the late Donald Colin (Dan Collie) and Catherine (MacQuarrie) MacDonald of Port Hood. Educated at Port Hood Academy, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, NS (Bachelor of Arts, 1958), Nova Scotia Normal College (Certificate in Mechanic Science, 1960) and University of Maine (Master of Science in Education, 1972). He began his teaching career in September 1960 at Guysborough Municipal High School, Guysborough, NS, where he taught woodwork and drafting. He was also Vice Principal from 1961 to 1971. He retired in June 1992. During his 32 years of teaching he was very involved in the Nova Scotia Teacher’s Union at the local level. For ten years, he was president of the Guysborough East Local and served on the negotiating committee with the School Board and the Union. Of special interest to him was time served on the executive of the Nova Scotia Industrial Arts Association and his term as president for the year 1979. During that period decisions were made for the name change from Industrial Arts to "Technology Education". Church activities and community involvement were also important to him. He was actively involved in the Federal and Provincial Liberal Party, the Chedabucto Curling Club, and St Ann’s Church "Men’s Club" for many years. He was a charter member of the local Lions Club and involved with it until its closure. Stanley is survived by his wife of 48 years Elizabeth (MacNaughton), his children, Sandy (Sherry) Lesterdale, NS, Eleanor (Menno Giesbrecht), Burns Lake, BC, Cairine (Joe Jurus), Milton, ON, and Colin (Lorraine), Dartmouth, NS. He loved and adored each and every one of his grandchildren: Jessica, Kaelyn, Justin, Janna, Eilidh, Sophie, Maria, Alea, Katherine, and Regan. He is also survived by brothers Winfred, Truro, Nova Scotia, Urban (Theresa) and Gregory, Windsor, ON. and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Bernice and his sister in-law, Lorraine. The body has been cremated. Visitation with family will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home in Guysborough from 2 to 9 pm on Wednesday, March 7, with funeral mass at St. Ann’s Church, Guysborough on Thursday, March 8, at 2 o’clock, with Father Jonathan Nweke and Father Francis Cameron officiating. Reception to follow at Guysborough Academy. Burial of ashes will be announced at a later date. Donations to honour Stanley’s memory may be made to Guysborough Memorial Hospital, R. K. MacDonald Nursing Home, St. Peter’s Cemetery, Port Hood or a charity of your choice.
