MacDonald, Rachel – 95, formerly of Glencoe Mills, Inverness County, NS passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 in Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home. Rachel was born in Saint Ninian, Inv. Co., on November 21, 1914, a daughter of the late Francis and Catherine Sarah MacDonald. Rachel was one of six children – John Dan, Duncan, Isabelle, John Archie and Mary Flora who is the last surviving member.
She was married to the late Hugh MacDonald. She is survived by her two daughters, Catherine Isabel (married to Ron Kennedy) and Pauline Marie. She was predeceased by her son, John, who died in 1950.
Rachel was employed as a housekeeper in Judique at St. Andrew’s Parish Glebe house and was noted for her excellent cooking skills and hospitality. She also worked for a time in Boston and Halifax. She was President of the Glencoe Altar Society and was one of the original organizers of the Glencoe Mills dances in the 1960’s. She was a fluent Gaelic speaker and also learned hymns and prayers in Latin. She loved Scottish music, Gaelic singing and playing cards and Bingo.
The wake for Rachel will be held at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 pm Thursday, September 30 with a vigil service at 7:00 pm.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Glencoe Mills at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 1st with Father Bernie MacDonald and Father Andrew Boyd con-celebrating.
