Obituary
Please share a memory of Peter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Peter Alexander Ferguson at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on November 1, 2012. Born in Kewstoke, Inverness County, on March 25, 1920, he was a son of the late George and Murdena (MacDonald) Ferguson. Peter was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Florrie (Nock) - Richmond Villa- and children Sandra (Kevin) Gillis, Skye Glen; George (Mary Beth), Whycocomagh; Murdo (Wilma), Port Hawkesbury; sister, Rebecca (John) Carew, Dartmouth; brother, D.J. (Phyllis), Skye Glen; grandchildren, Meghan, Adam, Drew, Cassie, Nicole and Lauren and many nieces and nephews.
Peter was predeceased by his brothers Malcolm (Mabel), Dan Hughie (Greta), and Alex in infancy; sisters, Catherine (John A.) MacLellan, Sarah (Donald John) Morrison, Annabelle (Carl) Betts, Florence (Peter L.) MacDonald, Martha (Kenneth) MacKinnon, Margaret (Duncan A.) MacKinnon.
Peter enlisted in the army in World War II, but during basic training fell ill with tuberculosis. He returned to the family farm where he lived and worked until he and his family moved to Whycocomagh in 1969. He felt proud of the service commitments of his two brothers and the other veterans he knew. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 123, Whycocomagh.
In 1957, he married Florrie Nock, and they had many happy and busy years together raising their family. They were able to celebrate their 40th and 50th anniversaries.
Peter spent his long life as a farmer, woodsman, truck driver, hunting guide and barber. His barbering days were among his most enjoyable with many hours of visits, stories and laughs with good friends.
Peter was a member of the Stewart United Church and the Stewartdale Cemetery Committee. To the end, he had an avid interest in and love for his community. Peter cherished opportunities to speak to and interact with those who loved the Gaelic language and culture as he did.
Peter will be remembered for his stories, incredible memory, generosity and love for his family and friends.
Many thanks are given to all those who helped care for Peter over the last years of his life: Dr. Bernie MacLean, Dr. Susie Egar, and the staff of the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital; numerous helpers and caregivers - Patsy MacDonald, Melody Ferguson, Billy and Shirley Nock, Tena Nock, Mary Smith and in his last days Tena Hawley. Most of all, we are indebted to the ‘Newfoundland Angels’: Catherine, Judy, Debbie, Marie and Mamie. Foremost in her devoted care to Peter was dear Dulcie Taylor. We will never be able to repay you for your loving care and compassion.
Visitation will be held 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4th from the Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh with the Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Burial will be in the Stewartdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Stewart United Church, Stewartdale Cemetery Fund, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 123, or a charity of your choice.
