Patricia Evangeline "Pat" Flemming, 83, of Antigonish, formerly of Canso and Lakevale, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish, on Wednesday, Feburary 29, 2012.Born in Antigonish in 1928, she was one of fourteen children of the late Frank and Mary (Parker) Ryan. After her 12 children were grown, Pat worked as a housekeeper at the Hazel Hill Rest Home. She was a true believer in education and, following the loss of her husband, Jim, she enrolled at St.F.X.U. in 1987, having been out of the classroom for forty-two years. She graduated in 1991 with her Bachelor of Arts at the age of 62, something of which both she and her children were very proud. She was a woman of strong faith and did scripture readings at the weekday Mass at St. Ninian's Cathedral. Music was always an important part of her life, and she loved to play guitar. She would entertain the Alzheimers patients at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home every week. She was also a member of the Bonnie Blends's Glee Club. Pat loved the outdoors and fishing, and until recently, could be seen walking everyday near her home on Clydesdale Road. She is survived by 5 daughters: Patricia (Dougald) Steele, South Lochaber; Kathy (Steve) Hartlen, Dartmouth; Mary Teresa Flemming (Richard Koval), Sioux Lookout, Ont.; Florence Flemming (Dave Murray), Canso; and Connie Flemming (John Murphy), Debert; sons: Joe (Ann), Canso; Arthur (Geneva) Canso, Phillip (Christine), Lantz; Paul, Quadra Island, BC, and Michael (Joan)Aspen; daughter-in-law, Sheila Flemming, Meaghers Grant; sister Evelyn Orsen, Sydney; and brother Jim Ryan, New Westminster, BC; 29 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Jack MacInnis, her partner of the last 12 years and Jack's sons Hughie, Johnny, and Allan.She was pre-deceased by her husband Jim (1985); sons Jim (2003) and George (1997); daughter Patricia in infancy; brothers: Francis, Joseph, Donald, Daniel, and David; sisters: Mary Leone, Florence McGrath, Regina Layes, Sr. Teresa Ryan CSM, Sr. Rita Ryan OSC, and Stella MacIsaac.She will always be remembered with love and admiration. Visitation will be from 2-4pm only on Sunday in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. The remains will be transferred to the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home ,Canso, for visitation on Monday 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:00am in Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Canso, Reverend Andrew Gillies presiding. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Star of the Sea Parish, Canso.
