Obituary
Please share a memory of Loyola to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Halfpenny, Loyola Marie (Sturgeon) - 82, Northwood Centre, Halifax, formerly of Melford, Guysborough, County. It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of "Mum", "Lola" (NS nickname), "Lolly" (NB nickname) on Thursday, April 21st, 2011 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax Born and raised in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, Lolly trained in Quebec as a stenographer. Fond memories of that time and especially her skiing exploits in the Laurentians were often recounted. Eventually settling in Toronto, she met and married a young man, Douglas C. Halfpenny from Nova Scotia who had "gone down the road" like many of his time to find employment. They returned to live in Melford where they raised six children, Elaine (Gary) MacMaster, Marilyn (Peter Conrad) MacPherson, Carol (Rod) White, Mike (Darlene) Halfpenny, Blair (Dawn Burchell) Halfpenny, Paul (Julie) Halfpenny. Also survived by extended family members Roderick MacPherson and Janice (Pellerine) Halfpenny, 19 grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren, left to mourn along with Doug. "Lolly" one of thirteen children is survived by her beloved sister and confidante, Jacqueline (Sherman) Esliger, Gordon (Inez), Everett and Lyall "Junior" Sturgeon. She was predeceased by her parents Lyall and Caroline (Gratton)Sturgeon, brothers Clinton, Cyril, Tommy, Gerald and her cherished sister Patricia and impish half-sisters, Thelma (Sylvernus) Fournier and Greta(Stan) MacLaughlin who were her heroes as she grew up. Also predeceased by sister-in-laws Valerie (Lyall) and Winnie (Everett) Sturgeon. Lola loved to read, play (win!) bingo, a good joke and took much comfort from a good cup of tea and a smoke. Mum was a "warrior mom" fiercely proud and protective of her family. "Lola" marched to the "beat of her own drum" and fought through the peaks and wanes of mental illness throughout her life with the support of friends, family and healthcare providers. Special thanks to Continuing Care service providers of Guysborough and Antigonish offices who helped keep her in her own home until her move to Northwood Centre, where she resided with Doug, her husband of 58 yrs., affording them the luxury of daily visits and chats. Our gratitude is also extended to the staff and management of Northwood Centre, for the care and support extended to Loyola. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 27th 2-4p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday April 28th in St James Anglican Church, Melford, Rev. Evelyn Knorr officiating. Burial to follow at a later date. Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. James Anglican Church General Fund, Melford. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com Service Information Service Date Thursday, April 28, 2011
