Obituary
Please share a memory of Garry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With deep sadness we announce the death of our father, husband, brother, and dear friend, Garry Patton Meagher. He died peacefully, from complications of a stroke, at St. Martha’s Hospital, in Antigonish, N.S., on December 4, 2012. Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife of 58 years, Adair (Kennedy), his children, Heather (Gary) Jewers, Erin (Kuz) Hayashi, Shane (Cindy) Meagher, Colleen (Danny) Toews, Tim Meagher (Marn Norwich), Shannon (Rob) Wiebe, Robyn Meagher (Jason Dorland), Kelly Meagher, Brendan (Peggy) Meagher. His siblings: Kevin Meagher, Kilmer (Janet) Meagher, Moira Keeping and Sharon (Harold) Beals, his 17 grandchildren, Nanci, Wendi, Kevin, Patrick, Sherin, Sarah, Katie, Caleb, Ben, Connor, Cory, Lauren, Cassidy, Mataya, Sydney, Jack and Ethan, 11 great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Alice (Carr) Meagher and his brother Terrence Meagher.
Dad was born, in Antigonish, N.S., on January 21, 1933, to William and Alice (Carr) Meagher. He was an avid sportsman, playing baseball and hockey in his youth and, as an armchair enthusiast in his later years. He worked in various locations including Halifax and Montreal before settling in Mulgrave with his young family to make a living working in the Strait area. Although trained as a welder, he came to have a long and storied career as a longshoreman at the wharf in Mulgrave, where he served as the President of the International Longshoreman’s Association Local 1976 for over 30 years, collectively.
Our father imparted to us his love of nature, especially animals, and his strong sense of social justice. He showed tremendous courage and grace throughout his illness and much laughter rang around his bedside from his indomitable wit. We shall cherish memories of him singing, dancing, fishing, telling stories, cheering on his team, and caring tenderly for our beautiful mother in her illness.
The brevity of an obituary can in no way allow us to begin to express the laughter he has given us or the beautiful and enduring love he shared with our mother, Adair.
We wish to express our thanks to those who cared for our father during his illness including the friends and neighbours who visited, sent cards, brought food or phoned, and, Dr. Gallivan and the staff at St. Martha’s Hospital, especially those in the Palliative and Progressive Care.
Donations, in his honour, can be made to the Salvation Army, St Martha’s Palliative Care, High-Crest Sherbrooke Nursing Home or Amnesty International.
We invite you to join us for a gathering to remember Dad at the Mulgrave Fire Hall, on Saturday December 8, 2010 at 2:00 pm.
