LONG, Garfield Emerson "Gary" - 48, Port Hawkesbury, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2007, ending his long struggle with ALS. Born in Port Colborne, Ont., on January 16, 1959, he lived in various places, however, Port Hawkesbury was his home. Gary was a son of the late Emerson Henry Long and Norma Long (both of Port Hawkesbury). Gary was employed through the years by The Scotia Sun, Gulf Oil and lastly owned and operated, with his wife, Sheila, Strait Printing and Publishing Ltd. He was a member of St. Mark's United Church as well as a member of the Solomon Lodge No. 46. An avid sportsperson, hockey was his greatest passion from the early age of six years old. Gary played with the SAERC hockey team, Senior Pirates and with his close friends and soul mates the Old Timer "Rebels", and never gave up on his team, the Montreal Canadiens. He was an involved member in his community and business. He was very proud to have served a number of positions on the Inverness-Richmond InRich Society Board of Directors. A loving and deeply caring husband, father, son, brother, and brother-in-law, Gary will be forever remembered and very sadly missed by his lovely wife and best friend, Sheila (Cameron); cherished and deeply missed by his children, Bhreagh, Ashley and William; his loving and devoted mother, Norma Long-Murray (Jessie); sisters, Dorothy (Phil) Maxwell, Pennfield, N.B.; his faithful and guarding angel sister, Gloria Chafe (Richard Bonnet), Port Hawkesbury; Norma (Dieter) Oswald, Hammonds Plains; Debbie (John) Poirier, Port Hastings; Tracey (Roger) Harper, Newtown; brothers, Steve Long (Liz Porter), Waddie (Kim), and David (Pat Tompkins), all of Port Hawkesbury. His many nieces and nephews will sadly miss his humour, guidance and unconditional love. He was predeceased by his infant sisters, Mary Chafe and Brenda Lee Long, and infant brother, Steve Chafe.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, with a Masonic service to be held at 7 p.m., both in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in St. Mark's United Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Rev. James Bragan officiating. Burial in Southbrook Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, ALS Society of Nova Scotia or to a charity of your choice.
