HAYES, Margaret (Upton) - 86, Port Hawkesbury NS and formerly of Point Tupper and Margaree Harbour passed away on Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born November 9, 1923, Margaret was the daughter of the late Henry and Margaret (Cameron) Upton of Port Malcom, NS. Margaret was retired from Nova Scotia Forest Industries and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Margaret always enjoyed a good game of cards, a night at bingo and sharing a cup of tea and plate of sweets with family and friends while she entertained them with her wonderful story-telling. A true Cape Bretoner to the core, you never left her house without having a cup of tea and fresh biscuits.
Margaret is survived by her husband Tommy Burns, Margaree Harbour; daughters, Joan (Grant) MacKay, Eastern Passage, and Loretta Kersten, Port Hawkesbury; sons, John (Mary) and Jimmy (Debbie), both of Port Hawkesbury; step-children, Jean Marie (Gerard) Deveaux, Tishie (Billy) Tighe, Elaine Langley (David), Shelly (Darren) Harb, David (Evelyn), Allan (Wanda), and Gary Burns; grandchildren, Andrea, Ashlee, Jamie, Martin, Maureen, Nancy, Rachel and Trina, several step-grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren . Also left to mourn are her brother-in-law, Collie Hayes, and her caregiver, Bonnie Hines of West Bay Road. Margaret will also be sadly missed by her little dog, Curly. She was predeceased by her first husband, John Hayes, son Gerard, daughter Delores, three children in infancy, brothers Bill (MaryJane) Upton, John (Eileen) Upton, and sister Mary (Henry) Harris.
Visitation will be held from 2-9 p.m. Sunday with a vigil service at 2 p.m. both in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Fr. Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial in the Parish cemetery. Memorial donations in Margaret’s name may be made to the Point Tupper Heritage Association or the Arthritis Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
