HARTLEY, Jean Florence - 84, Hazel Hill, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2005, in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso, after a brief illness.
Born in Port Williams, Kings Co., she was the daughter of the late Lorne and Milda (Tibert) Rand.
Florence graduated from Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and came to Canso as a member of the Victorian Order of Nurses, and later worked at Eastern Memorial Hospital and the Hazel Hill Rest Home. She was an active volunteer in the community with the Shamrock Seniors Club, Shorebird Craft Guild and the Canadian Cancer Society, among others. Florence received awards from the Canso Lions Club in 1980. In 1992 Florence was awarded the Government of Canada, Canada 125 medal for her contribution and efforts in the community.
She is survived by daughter, Margaret Ann (George) McKenzie, Courtenay, B.C.; sons, Lorne (Mary), Ottawa; James (Jan), Summerside; Peter (Elizabeth), Ottawa; Charles, Timmons, Ont.; David (Louise), Moncton; Bruce (Loraine), Smithers, B.C.; Gerald (Daphne), Blockhouse; Rand (Emily), Port Hawkesbury; daughter-in-law, Fern, Winnipeg; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Charles; son, John.
Cremation has taken place.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 17, in Star of the Sea Church, Father Daniel Boudreau officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to Star of the Sea Parish Cemetery Fund or Eastern Memorial Hospital Palliative Care.
