SMITH, Neilena Florence – 74, of Upper River Denys, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2022 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish surrounded by her loving family and is now at home with her Lord and Saviour.
Neilena was born on November 20, 1947 in Inverness, to the late Thomas R. and Katherine (Gillis) MacPhail. She married her soulmate, David, on August 9, 1969. Together they raised cherished son, Jamie (Colleen) and daughter and best friend, Carol. Neilena’s pride and joy were her grandchildren Bryanna and Joshua Smith.
Neilena is also survived by sisters and best friends, Becky (Brent) Austen and Marion (Bobby) Campbell, brothers-in-law, Raymond Chandler and Ernie Smith; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth MacPhail, Anna Smith and Grace Smith; nephews, Scott (Darlene) Austen, Matthew (Siobhan), Bradley (Kassie), Michael (Chantalle) and Brent (Chelsea) Campbell and Wayne (Wanda) Chandler and nieces, Stephanie (Mark) MacEachern and Patricia (Chris) MacDonnell along with grandniece, Savanna MacEachern and grandnephews, Sean Austen, Neil MacEachern, Cael Austen, Isaac, Owen, Lachlan and Cohen Campbell, Ethan and Evan Chandler and Kyle and Kirk MacDonnell, great-grandnephew, Khalid MacDonnell as well as many cousins and friends.
Along with being predeceased by her parents, gone before her were brothers, Darrell and Robert and sister, Anne Chandler, sister, Margaret Anne in infancy; nephew, Roger Chandler and grandnephew, Noah MacEachern.
Neilena worked at Georgia Pacific for 42 years in the office and made many lasting friends through the years. She was a very active member of Sovereign Grace Presbyterian Church in Blues Mills and had a particular heart for community outreach. She was a vital member of the Blues Mills and Area Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary for many years and had lots of fun times catering to their many events. Neilena was the most generous, kindest and compassionate person, always putting the wants and needs of others ahead of her own. She loved her family dearly and deeply and was happiest when surrounded by them and their love. Our family will never be the same having lost our core.
The family would like to thank Dr. MacEachen, Dr. Pereira, Dr. Cooper and the ICU nurses at St. Martha’s for their compassionate care.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Visitation will take place on Friday, June 3rd from 2-8 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held in the Blues Mills Gospel Hall at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 officiated by Pastor Wayne MacLeod. Burial will take place in Upper River Denys Cemetery. The family is requesting that face masks are to be worn at the visitation and funeral service. Donations in memory of Neilena can be made to Sovereign Grace Presbyterian Church Community Outreach c/o Mary Anne MacDonald or to the Blues Mills and Area Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
