Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
SMITH, John Harold - 75, Glendale, Inverness Co., died in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Friday, June 14, 2019, with his family by his side. Dad lost his fight to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Born in Broad Cove on March 3rd 1944, Cape Breton, NS, dad was one of 16 children of the late John A. and Catherine (MacDonnell) Smith. A self-taught carpenter, dad was a hard worker who was very kind and giving of his time to help anyone. He worked in Boston and Halifax before coming home with his family and settling in Glendale, Cape Breton. The old adage holds true in saying that the last house a carpenter works on is his own. However, in saying that he was a great provider and a true friend to many over the years.
Dad loved to spend time with family at the old homestead in Broad Cove and enjoyed fiddle music, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Toronto Maple Leaf's and a good hot cup of tea with his sweets. As hard as it is to refuse, we know Sr. Marie is welcoming you with open arms and playing the bird dance.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine (Smeenk) and children, Michael (Patti) Smith, Lunenburg; Heather (Jim) Chisholm, Dartmouth; and stepdaughter, Sonya Smeenk, Red Water AB; 2 grandchildren, Jason and Niamh; step grandkids, Colton, Chelsey and Clinton; sisters, Donna (Wesley) MacLean, Scotsville; Mary Campbell, Waltham MA; and Mae Ann Beaton, Port Hood; brother, Peter (Catherine) Smith, Natick MA.
Besides his parents, Harold was predeceased by his son, Jason Smith; sisters, Theresa Ann, Hughena, Margaret, Sister Marie Smith and Kay Sexton; and by brothers, James Hugh, Donald Angus, Charlie Angus, Alexander, and two children at childbirth.
