WHITTY, Lawrence Daniel "Laurie" -92, St. Peter’s passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Greenvale, PEI, he was a son of the late Daniel and Effie (MacDonald) Whitty.
Laurie was a veteran of WWII and served 25 years with the Royal Canadian Navy and 8 years with the Canadian Coast Guard. He also worked at the Canso Canal in Port Hastings. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47 in St. Peter’s, St. Peter’s Parish in St. Peter’s and a former member of St. Peter’s Lions Club. Also, he was a long-time member of the Holy Name Society and St. Joseph’s Parish in Halifax. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his loving wife of 66 years, Cecilia (Stone); son, Leonard (Maureen), Sampsonville; grandchildren, Serena (Marc Rapitta), Dartmouth; Linden (Amy), River Bourgeois; Holly Ann, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Crystal, Kyle, Sandra. He was predeceased by his son, Robert; brothers, John, Peter, Bernard; sisters, Florence, Alice and Margaret in infancy.
By his request there will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be 9 a.m. Saturday from St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Peter’s with Father Antolin Asor officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Peter’s Cemetery Fund or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 26 Centennial St. St. Peter’s. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
