MURPHY, Bertha Evelyn - aged 89, Canso, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, February 17, 2014 in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Born on June 3, 1924, in Canso, she was a daughter of the late Mary (Snyder) and John Rhynold. Mom thoroughly enjoyed her past 9 years as a resident of the Canso Seaside Manor. Her favorite pastime was playing cards and completing her crossword puzzles. But most of all she enjoyed the company of her wonderful roommate Mrs. Bertha Grover. Mom also was very pleased to have found the playful companionship of the cat, Ginger. In 1946, Bertha married the love of her life, Reginald Murphy and raised their family of five in their home in Fox Island Main. Mom retired as a clerk from Hart’s Store, Canso. As a Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother she was always there with love and affection. She will be lovingly remembered by sons, George (Anne), Canso; John (Mary), Clydesdale; daughters, Marilyn Ryan (Jim), Sarnia, Ont.; Lois, Antigonish; and Patricia, Canso; grandchildren, Annette, Kenny, Yvonne, Scott, Heidi, Nicole, Jeff, Jennifer, Danielle, Bryan and Julia; great- grandchildren, Patrick, Maggie, Rachael, Nicholas, Liam, Devon, Reaghan, Rowen, Shaniah, Carter and Ben. She is survived by sister-in-law, Bernadette Hadley, Truro. Mom is preceded in death by her loving husband, Reginald; brothers, Clarence, Cecil, Vincent and Aubrey; sisters, Veronica, Eunice and Lois. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks for the care and devotion that their mother received from the staff at the Seaside Manor, Canso. Our appreciation is also extended to the Doctors and Nurses of the staff of the Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Our Mother was blessed by the wonderful residents at the Manor and the many friends who visited her. Visitation will take place Wednesday, February 19th from 2-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Mass will be held on Thursday, February 20th, 11 a.m. from Star of the Sea Parish, Canso, with Father Dan MacDonald officiating.
