Smith, Chester Roy - 100, Halifax, formerly of Port Hawkesbury, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013, surrounded by his family .Born in Whitney Pier, he was a son of the late Aubrey C. Smith and Sarah Smith (Sadie Davis, nee Lewis). He attended Port Hawkesbury High School and graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Nova Scotia Hospital, class of 1937. As a young man he was very interested in sports, including track and field, basketball, baseball, softball, swimming and boxing. While in high school he led a team from Port Hawkesbury to the Interscholastic Track and Field Meet in Halifax. He was an avid deer hunter and trout fisherman. He served 6 years in the Royal Canadian Navy and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In 1941 he served with the British Royal Navy on armed merchant cruiser H.M.S. Maloja. Following World War II he was employed as Ward Master at the Veterans Hospital in Point Edward and later as Ward Supervisor at the Halifax County Rehabilitation Centre. He was employed by Cape Tide Water Construction during the construction of the pulp mill in Point Tupper and is a retiree of Stora. He and wife, Annie, lived for many years in Port Hawkesbury, where they raised their family. He was a life member, past Vice President, and Chaplain of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, and Past Master of Solomon Lodge number 46, both of Port Hawkesbury. He was a past Secretary-Treasurer, Elder and Trustee of St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury. For the past 20 plus years he lived in Halifax, most recently in Northwood Centre. He was a member of Fairview United Church in Halifax. He was pre-deceased by his step-father, William B. Davis; his wife of many years, Annie (Frelick) Smith; his brother, Aubrey in infancy, his brother, Harry Smith, stepsisters, Annie MacDonald, Daisy Lamey, Carrie "Merce" and Hattie; stepbrothers, Joseph, Donald and William Davis. He is survived by daughters, Debbie (Willie) Osborne, Saint John, NB; and Sandra Smith Muir (Brian Muir), Bedford, NS; by grandchildren, Dax (Crystal) Osborne, Luke Osborne, Sonya Osborne (Matt Brooks); Erin Muir (Derek Yu) and Alex Muir; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville Street, Port Hawkesbury from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. and Legion service at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be at St. Mark’s United Church, Bernard Street, Port Hawkesbury, at 11a.m. on Thursday, May 2 with Rev. Rick Bowley officiating. Interment will be at Southbrook Cemetery. Donations may be made to the CNIB, Southbrook Cemetery, or the charity of your choice.
