Whalen, John Joseph - 74, of Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s, Richmond Co., formerly of Grantville, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2012 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. John was born in Stellarton, Pictou Co., on August 5, 1938, he was a son of the late Michael Whalen and Mary "Bernadette" (Hartling) Malcolm. John worked as a surveyor for various construction crews throughout his working career. He loved to play cards and watch sports. He is survived by his sister, Bernadette "Sis" (Gary) MacNeil, Port Hawkesbury; brothers, Allie (Marlene), Freddie "Ted" (Charlotte), Bernie (Mary Theresa), all of Grantville, and several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his brother, Norman Malcolm and step-father, Albert Malcolm. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2013 in St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, Lower River Inhabitants with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in John’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.
