Obituary
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Phalen, James Bernard "Jim" - 69, Dartmouth. Passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the VG Site, QE11, Halifax. Born in Guysborough, on September 27, 1941, he was a son of the late James and Marguerite (Shea) Phalen. At a young age Jimmie left home for work in Toronto but returned home to Nova Scotia in 1973. He was a proud Member of United Association Plumbers and Pipefitters Union local 56. When he wasn’t travelling across Canada for work he drove for Bob’s and Satellite Taxi where he got his nickname of "two-two", his roof light number 22. Even after he retired from the taxi business in 2004 he often would go out to Sackville to see all his "cabbie" friends. He was well liked by all who knew him.
"Jimmie" was very brave and accepting all throughout his illness but fought until the very end. We will remember a quiet man with a kind smile and a big heart who loved children and loved to tease them. He had a sense of humour which he maintained right until the end.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Tanner); sisters, Marion Phalen, Toronto; Maureen (Maurice) Landry, special nephew, Philip James Landry, all of Halifax; aunts, Patricia Young, Guysborough; Helen Sceeles, Toronto and Dorothy Williams, Guysborough; and uncle, Jackie (Marion) Shea, Boylston as well as many cousins.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 13 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 14 in St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Guysborough with Father Jonathan Nweke officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Jimmie’s memory to the QE11 Health Center Foundation Palliative Care Unit VG Site, the Canadian Cancer Society or St. Ann’s Cemetery Fund.
The family would like to say a special Thank You to the staff of 7A and 9A of the VG who were exceptional in their care. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
