Martin, Stephen "Ekkian" age 60, of Waycobah First Nations. It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen "Ekkian" Martin, 60 of Waycobah on Thursday, June 18, 2015, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Wagmatcook, he was a son of the late Charles Francis and Mary Anne (Bernard) Martin. Ekkian was a talented musician and spent much of his time singing and playing the guitar. One of his proudest accomplishments was his CD release, but he also played on Stacy’s Country Jamboree, and for many years in the band Silver Moon, where he played at many community events. He was a long time member of Holy Trinity Church, Waycobah, where he played the guitar and sang in the Choir. He was very involved with children’s music in the church and at school for special occasions. In Waycobah he was well known for helping elders and fundraising for community needs. He was a volunteer with the Waycobah Fire Department, drove ambulance and medical taxi and worked at the Waycobah Fishery. Stephen is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Anne (Mollyon) Martin; sister, Isabel (Ricky Gould); brother, Noel. Stephen was proud of his whole family, and often spoke about his children and foster-children, Richard Cabot, Vincent Martin (Petula); Valerie Martin (Darcy); Rodney Martin; Charles Martin; Donna Martin; Vincent "Jij" Martin; Veronica Martin; foster children, Connie Basque; Annie Basque and Little John LeRoy. Ekkian and Mollyon were foster parents for 25 years. Stephen loved to fish and sing with his 47 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and 15 godchildren. He will be deeply missed as well by his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Donna Marie, sister, Sarah (Carson) Bright, brothers, Frank, Larry and Joseph. Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. Monday in the Multi Purpose Building, 160 Reservation Road, Waycobah First Nation. Funeral mass will be 2 p.m. Wednesday from Blessed Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Waycobah with Father Antolin Asor officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
