MacNEIL, Catherine Mary – 89, of Port Hood, passed away peacefully in the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. Catherine was born in Judique on November 30, 1924, the daughter of the late Alexander "Sandy" Christopher and Jennie (MacInnis) MacDonnell. The youngest of four children, she was the last surviving member of her family. Following high school in Judique, she completed post secondary education in secretarial, her first employment being with the Dept. of Agriculture at the Mabou office. She later moved to Detroit, as it was the trend at the time for a lot of Cape Bretoner’s, where she worked and also married John R. MacNeil of Mabou. They moved to Cape Breton in the mid fifties and settled in Port Hood, where Catherine worked as Credit Union Manager, later with the Municipality of Inverness and finally with the Inverness District School Board, from where she retired after a career lasting over forty years. She was a self taught piano player who loved to entertain and did so often, never turning down the opportunity to play at a house party, a dance, or other gathering, both in Cape Breton and during the years she lived in Detroit. She was a lifelong member of the CWL and an active member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party during her retirement years. Catherine’s family would like to express sincere appreciation to Dr. Collins and the staff of the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home for the excellent care she received. Catherine is survived by daughter, Sandra; sons, John, Chris (Rebecca) and Curtis; brother-in-law, Stanley; sisters-in-law, Teresa and Flora Catherine; 12 nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents; husband, John; sisters, Betty and Jessie; brother, Hugh Alex. A funeral service for family and relatives will be held at St. Peter’s Parish, Port Hood with Father Vincent Van Zutphen officiating. Burial to follow at a later date in the parish cemetery.
