Obituary
Please share a memory of Walter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MATTIE, Walter – 79, Mattie Settlement, Antigonish Co., passed away on Monday, March 11, 2013, after a brief illness, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Mattie Settlement, he was a son of the late Simon and Hattie (Delorey) Mattie.
Walter worked in the forestry industry. He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Tracadie, St. Peter's Holy Name Society. Along with Theresa, he opened his home to friends, old and new. They came from India, Russia and parts of Canada. Over the course of the years, Walter turned his hand to many tasks and the one he loved the most was tinkering with his machinery in the garage. Walter’s mind was always busy, thinking of ways to improve this part or that and coming up with new ways to get things moving.
Walter was a good neighbour and a great friend to everyone who needed a hand. What we will remember most is how he could make us all laugh and his whole face and body became so alive when he shared a story. He was never so happy as when he had a friend to talk with, sitting at his table or working in his garage. Once he got to know you, Walter was all talk and all stories.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa (McKeough) Mattie; his children, Gary (Corrine), Antigonish; Debbie (Allan) Pettipas, Antigonish; Glenn (Joanne), St. Lazare, Que; grandchildren, Yvonne, Jennifer and Paige Mattie; Matthew and Ashley Pettipas; Samuel Mattie; great-granddaughter, Kiana Mattie; sisters, Kay Boucher, Theresa Guthro, Josephine Tate and Dora (Clarence) MacDonald; brothers, Burkley and Russell; aunts, Rita and Marjorie Carr; several nieces and nephews.
