MACKEEN, Charles Haliburton – 93, Guysborough, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, in the Milford Haven Home for Special Care, Guysborough. Born in Guysborough on October 8, 1918, he was the youngest child of the late Fulton and Ida (MacDonald) MacKeen. After graduating from Guysborough Academy, Charles attended Acadia University until the death of his father and uncle brought him home to run the family business, R. MacKeen and Sons Sawmill. The mill closed in 1968 and Charles and his family moved to Hubbardston, Massachusetts. While there he was employed at Curtis Lumber Company until his retirement in 1981, when he returned home (the very next day!) to his beloved Guysborough. As sawdust ran deep in his blood, Charles continued to run a small sawmill in his boathouse on the waterfront for more than 25 years. He enjoyed visiting friends and family, and those who knew him will dearly miss his smile and sense of humour. Charles was a longtime treasurer of Evergreen Cemetery Corporation, and participated in many community fundraising events. Charles was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean (Luddington) and sons, Douglas (Carmel MacDonald), East Mountain; and Bruce (Angela), Guysborough; He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Marilyn (John) Nicholson of Dartmouth. He was also predeceased by his sister, Helen (Charles) Scranton, formerly of Hazelbrook, PEI; and brother, Harry, formerly of Boylston. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Megan, Brittany, Kaylie, Spencer, Rebecca and Caroline who fondly remember Papa’s playfulness, teasing ways and his ruthless prowess at Chinese Checkers. The MacKeen family would like to thank the staff and doctors of the Milford Haven Home for Special Care where Charles resided for the past two years. The compassionate and dedicated care shown to Charles and his family was appreciated. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 1, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough.
